Nerve of One Who Looks At the Surface

[I never write long entries. But I decided to edit my post on the ULTRA tragedy in response to someone who argued against me in another person’s blog.].

To the blogger: http://www.blogger.com/profile/18351226

Here is what he said to me when I said ABS-CBN should be blamed

who should be blamed?!? that is, indeed, the question... i've been following the news on TFC and i'm just sooo sick of people pointing fingers and what not...should abs-cbn be blamed??? should they be blamed for their efforts in trying to help the impoverished sector of our country??? i don't believe they're trying to wash their hands 'coz, first and foremost, we all know they never wanted this to happen... NO ONE wanted this to happen... not abs-cbn, not the pasig municipality, not the hopeful filipinos, and certainly not the victims...

i just want to disagree on your statement that finger pointing does help 'coz it DOES NOT and it never will... it will just worsen the situation and derail whatever chance abs-cbn has to help and reach out to the victim's families...

for us filipinos here in abroad, it is heart-warming to know that there is finally a show that does not only deliver entertainment, but also caters to the plight of the poor... wowowee and willie revillame are blessings to our less fortunate countrymen... and for some people to make insidious comments about people and programs like these is just like proving that there is no more hope for the poor majority of our country... and i say SHAME on those non-sense critics...

let's continue to support abs-cbn and wowowee and all other shows that have been serving as samaritans to the poor...

and let's keep praying not only for the victims, but also for our less fortunate countrymen to not give up their hopes and most especially for our government to not lose its sight and other senses on this eye-opening and heartwrenching incident...

FACT ONE:. MORE THAN 70 PEOPLE DIED

FACT TWO: THEY DID NOT DIE BECAUSE OF HUNGER OR STARVATION. They died because they got trapped with all the pushing and shoving, while trying to be the first to get inside ULTRA. And they wanted to get ahead because they have been waiting for days with no sleep nor adequate food for a chance to win what Willie Revillame hyped and promised to be big: cash, house and lot, cars, etc.

THE PROBLEM WITH US, FILIPINOS, IS WE LACK ACCOUNTABILITY.

The government should be made accountable for our woes. Governments exists to ensure order and proper distribution of the nation's reasources. Yes, they should accept accountability for the state of the nation.

True, no one wanted this to happen. I do not believe there is a Filipino so evil so as to wish for the deaths of more than 70 poor people.

But ABS-CBN capitalized on people's material needs and wants to attract them to attend the anniversary show. They allowed the crowd to gather so they can brandish in their NEWS that people are lining up for the show. But did they add more security? More standby medical crew? Did they have a public address system?
The head of security at ABS-CBN, Rene Luspo, said his team anticipated the crowd would be unruly and had taken "adequate" precautions but that the crush was "more than we expected". "We thought we had done all that was humanly possible," he said.

All that was humanly possible? Did they do anything of the above?

The answer to that is a resounding: No!

ABS-CBN created the hype, but they lacked planning. They should be made accountable for the deaths of those people.

DARE YOU CALL ME INSIDIOUS! While you are out there watching TV, while WILLIE doles out cash and you dole out crumbs of your earning, I am with them. Teaching them to read and write. Helping them learn new skills. Build their dreams and their lives.

I don’t dangle millions for ratings. I have no TFC subscribers and sponsors to please. So I don’t fool the least of my countrymen in thinking that if they wait long enough, luck will come their way.

You call doling-out help? I challenge you to come back to the homeland. Spend time with these poor people and tell me if the help they need is as SIMPLISTIC as “donations” and “prayers”.

Try looking in the eyes of poverty. Your 100 dollar donations may help you feel better about yourself, make you feel less guilty that you are well-off and then are not. But that amount will only help them for a moment. If you don’t build their character and teach them the value of hardwork, and patience they will always be POOR… in the pocket and in spirit.

I pray for the victims and their families and the poor of this nation.

Sympathy is great and touching and sweet…but justice is much, much sweeter.
